Title:
Students and the problem of insomnia
Problem definition:
People had troubles with insomnia back in the old days, and it is still a very frequent sleep problem nowdays. Many doctors offer some instructions on how to prevent insomnia, but people are still likely to get ill from it. Although it mostly occurs at an old age, many students have some kind of sleeping disorders. Any kind of sleeping disorder heavily affects students' life because they must be totally focused on their studying if they want to get the right results.
We would like to find out how many students suffer from the sleeping disorder and what the causes for their problems are. We will focus on influences of study commitments on insomnia and on the pressure that students feel in their life. We would also like to engage in research the effect of insomnia on relations with other people as we think that a sleepless person changes her behaviour.
Research questions:
- What is insomnia?
- What types of Insomnia are there?
- What are the causes?
- How many students fall sick?
- How do study commitments influence on it?
- Is it more present during the examination period?
- How does it influence relations with other people?
- Is it related to any other disease?
- What are the most appropriate treatments?

Minutes of the 3rd meeting (held on 7 March, 2008 at Kmš conference room)
Present: Urban Jernejčič, Karin Čubej, Tjan Sodin
Absent: None
Agenda
- Glossary
- Review of the tasks
ITEM 1:
We found many terms for the forming of our glossary and we discussed them. We narrowed our list to just 10 terms. All the terms are consistent with our topic. Not all of us agreed with some translations but after the short consultation we translated the 10 terms into Slowene.
1. circadian rhythm (24urni cikel psiholoških procesov)
2. Insomnia (nespečnost)
3. major depression (huda depresija)
4. pituitary gland (možganski privesek)
5. sleeping tablets (tablete za spanje)

8. Cognitive Therapy (poznavalna terapija - tip psihoterapije)
9. relaxation techniques (tehnike pomirjevanja)
10. sleep deprivation (pomankanje spanja)
ITEM 2:
We had a short review of the tasks that were appoited to us. We found out that we needed to work harder if we want to make our presentation as good as possible.
Minutes taker: Tjan
Chair: Karin
Minutes of the 2nd meeting (held on 29 February, 2008 at library)
Present: Urban Jernejčič, Karin Čubej, Tjan Sodin
Absent: None
Agenda:
- Narrowing down our theme
- Distributing tasks
- Finding literature
- Any other business
ITEM 1:
Discussion: We found out that our topic is too extensive, so we decided that we should focus on one group of people.
Decision: As we are all students we all agreed that we should focus on students and their problems with sleeping. We also agreed that we would concentrate on the influence of social circumstances on this disorder.
ITEM 2:
Decision: We all agreed that we must distribute the tasks in the way that everyone has nearly the same quantity of work.
-Tjan will research the causes of insomnia and find out what it is
- Karin will research how frequent this disorder is among students, why it affects them and how we can prevent it
- Urban will research how to treat insomnia
ITEM 3:
Discussion: Urban proposed that one of us should search for literature on the Internet and two in the library. Tjan and Karin agreed with him.
Decision: Urban will find literature on the Internet, Tjan and Karin will search for books in the library.
ITEM 4:
We discussed about our topic and future plans but as we had agreed upon our tasks we ended our meeting.
Minutes taker: Karin
Chair: Urban
Minutes of the 1st meeting (held on 22 February, 2008 at NetCafe):
Present: Urban Jernejčič, Karin Čubej, Tjan Sodin
Absent: None
Agenda:
ITEM 1:
Discussion: We discussed about the topic and we all agreed that we should pick a topic which was not part of our assignments before, so we could have some benefit from doing it.
Decision: We decided that insomnia is a topic which would be the most appropriate.
ITEM 2:
Discussion: There was some disagreement on the focus of the problem. Karin and Urban thought that we should focus on curing the disorder while Tjan was in favour of the causes of the disease. We solved the problem by deciding that the key point should be treatment but Tjan would be assigned for the part of the PBL that involves causes.
Decision: The key point is the treatment of insomnia.
Assignments: Urban and Karin will be focusing on the key point.
Tjan will try to research the causes of insonia.
ITEM 3:
Discussion: We all agreed that we should include 10 questions but they will not have the same weight. After that we discussed which questions we should include and we wrote them down on a piece of paper.
Decision: The questions about the treatment are more important so we will focus on those three we selected.
ITEM 4:
Discussion: Since we were very pleased about our first meeting and our topic, we generally debated about how we would work on our project in the future.
Minutes Taker: Urban
