Presence or absence of xenophobia among young Slovenes,

especially against minorities from ex-Yugoslavia in Slovenia

 

Definition

 

 

Xenophobia stands for a fear or contempt of foreigners and foreign things. It is a compound word from the Greek: xenos – foreigner and phobos – fear. The target of xenophobia can be people that are considered as different as well as outland cultural entities. On one hand there are xenophobic people, on the other hand there are people, who are open-minded and have no problems with foreign people and cultures. We would like to focus our research on young Slovene people to find out if they are xenophobic or not. From our experience we assume that young Slovenes are open-minded, but in contrary our schoolmate was stopped by Slovene police because of Romanian plate.

3. What are the levels of being xenophobic?

4. What are the reasons for being xenophobic?

5. What are the main minorities in Slovenia?

6. What is the relationship with the minorities and countries of their origin?

7. Are young Slovenes xenophobic or not?

8. If they are, how much?

9. Are there any solutions for prospective xenophobia?

The questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 are more theoretical that is why we will explore them individually:

 

• Martina: the 1st and 4th question
• Dagmar: the 2nd and 5th question
• Ricarda: the 3rd and 9th question

 

Every one will work with the specific resources which apply to her questions (see above). We will try to explain and describe our topics.

 

 

The questions 6, 7 and 8 seem to be more empirical that is why we will explore them together.

The minutes of the first meeting for PBL

held on 21st November 2007 at Dáša´s dorm

Item 1

 

We have distributed the roles last week and we discussed about the content of them.

 

Item 2

 

Discussion: Richarda proposed a topic concerning young Slovenes´opinion about Tito or swastika. Martina said that the topic could be Slovene identity. Dáša suggested possible existence of xenophobia in Slovenia as another topic. Everyone explained his topic to the others and we discussed about possible problems which could emerge during the research.

 

Decision: After a long discussion we have chosen Dáša´s topic.

 

Item 3

 

Discussion: Everyone said what xenophobia means form him and shared his experience about this topic with others. We also talked about the situation in our countries. Than we went over to situation in Slovene. After that we agreed that nobody of us has personally bad experience with Slovenes. From the definition followed our research questions.

 

Decision: We defined xenophobia as fear and contempt of foreigners and foreign things. We made a list of nine research questions. In our research we are going to presuppose that young Slovene people are open-minded to foreign people.

 

Item 4

 

We agreed that for our meetings we will change flats of each other. We will meet every Wednesday after our lessons.

Discussion: Dáša proposed her distribution of tasks. Everyone of us agreed with her proposal.

 

Decision: We distributed the questions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 this way: Martina: the 1st and 4th question, Dagmar: the 2nd and 5th question, Ricarda: the 3rd and 9th question. We are going to work on the other questions together because these questions require an empirical research.

Martina informed us about her selection of her literature, which is very similar to Dáša's. We agreed with her selection.

Item 1

 

Discussion: We had more time (one week more than normally) for our work, so we changed the date and time of our third meeting. We have borrowed the books from the library according the list we made a week ago.

 

Decision: Our meeting was planned on 13th December at Ricarda's dorm. Because we can borrow only 5 books in our library, we have to share them. Our project is being developed now.

 

Item 2

 

Discussion: We were talking about the form of our research. After that we were resolving when and how we will make the research questions which will be the same for all informants. Then we were debating when we will carry out our research. 

 

Decision: We decided that our research will be conducted in form of interview. Each of us will be asking three young Slovenes. Deadline for our research questions is this Sunday (16th December). We will make our research on Monday 17th December.

 

Item 3

 

Discussion: The first problem of our PBL report was to divide our work on three parts. With that we determined who will write the introduction and conclusion. The third and last topic was who will unite the whole work.

 

Decision: Each of us will work on one's own questions. Dáša will work conclusions and Martina introduction. Everyone will send her part via email to others (including her research on three Slovenes). The whole report will unite Martina.

 

Item 4

 

Discussion: This topic is concerned to the last part of our work - presentation in PowerPoint.

 

Decision: Each person in our group will work her two questions and research and then anyway like the work on report will sent by email to others. The whole presentation will unite Martina.

The next meeting will be in January before our presentation in the class.
